Economic Development Commission Minutes 09/25/12

Town Of Willington
Economic Development Commission Meeting
Meeting Minutes of
September 25, 2012

Attendees:      Kim Kowalyshyn, Chairman                        Tom Treiber, Sec
                Jackie   Silverstein                                    Tom Buccino
                Walt Parsell

Opened Meeting at 8:00 PM

Approval of Minutes:
Jackie moved to approve the meeting minutes from June 20, 2012.  Tom seconded.  The motion passed unanimously.
Old Business:
- Business Directory – Kim reported that funds from advertisements by Willington businesses now cover all but $280.00 of printing and distribution costs. It is anticipated that shortfall will be covered by several other Willington businesses that are expected to place advertisements. We set November 1, 2012 as a deadline for receipt of a draft copy of directory from Anything Printed for proofing. Kim also advised that missing data on businesses that did not complete a fact sheet will have to be obtained by Commission members.
- Love’s Travel Center and Dunkin Donuts Update – Walt reported that both applicants are seeking a change in a Town regulation that basically prohibits “fast food” businesses.
- Business Feature on Website – The third business profile (The Mill Works) now appears on our Website. It is being featured for September.  Kim will explore ways to improve the way a featured business is displayed on our Website.
- EDC Finances – We decided not to join the Tolland Chamber thus keeping our budget in tact for other expenses including the business directory and business networking.
- Business Networking Meeting.  Kim suggested that we host a workshop that engages business owners/representatives in coming up with ideas to promote business development. Jackie will take the lead on this project. It was agreed that the meeting would take place in January 2013.
- Wilderness Way/Ray Crossen – Red Rock Events – Warrior Challenge.  First Selectman Christina Mailhos advised that she had competed in the event along with about 3000 other participants. She said that it took place at the Thompson Speedway. Discussion ensued on whether such an event would work at Wilderness Way and what benefit, if any, it would have for the Town and other Willington businesses.
- Ashford Business Association (ABA) - Kim was contacted about our interest in joining the ABA.  After discussion, it was decided that Kim will invite a representative of the ABA to come to our next meeting to discuss the benefits of membership to our Commission and Willington businesses.
New Business:
-  New Business Activity and Contacts – Owner of Benny’s Restaurant in Vernon apparently has option to buy former site of Teggianno’s Restaurant pending necessary regulatory approvals.
-  Correspondence – Kim was copied in on an e-mail from Susan Yorgensen, but needs clarification from Susan on what is involved.
Public Comment:
  • Others present and participating in discussions were First Selectman Christina Mailhos, Planning and Zoning Commission Chairman Andy Marco, Ralph Tulis and Don Berg. Our thanks to them for their interest and input.
Ongoing Activities:
- We have two alternate seats open.  Christina Stetson has expressed interest in an alternate seat.

Meeting adjourned at 9:00 PM.  Next meeting to be held on Monday October 22, 2012 at 6:00 pm.

Respectfully submitted,

Tom Treiber
